Betelgeuse by acidrums4 Betelgeuse by acidrums4
Betelgeuse is the name for a big star from Orion constellation. The intention of this project is to create a complete, modern, clean and eye-candy icon theme for the KDE Desktop Environment.

Here aren't all but the more decent icons (I guess). There's a lot of work to do and I dont' have time. If you want to help or make a donation, please leave me a note, start by doing a branch for my git repo or send me a mail.

Or just share your suggestions! Hope you like it and excuse me for my bad english.

INSTALL

You can download the zip file and extract it under ~/.kde4/share/icons/, or clone the git repo doing:

git clone git://gitorious.org/betelgeuse/betelgeuse-sources.git
cd betelgeuse-sources
sh ./build.sh

CONTRIBUTE

There's a lot of work to do. You will notice, for example, there's no icons for 16x16, 22x22 or 24x24, so there's a fake raster to fill them with bigger icons. Feel free to contribute to developing it! You can do it at some ways:

1. Creating and editing icons. If you think you've skills at icon designing and you know what Inkscape is (Thanks Karbon, your boolean operations with paths is a pain in the ass) you could help with it. You can clone the git repo at

git://gitorious.org/betelgeuse/betelgeuse-sources.git

and starting designing icons or make the changes you think they need.

Please DON'T make/edit and publish any icon as a standalone work. I will give credits for all people that help with it, the idea is to keep this project unified as much as we can.

Please DON'T use any SVG filters, masks, blur and crap like that. It makes them uncompatible with QtSVG. Please follow as much as you can the style of icons.

2. Donating money. I'm just a poor graphic design student, seriously. I'm not receiving any cent, neither for this work. I even don't have any bank account so anybody could donate money via paypal. If somebody know how people can make donations so them can come here to Bogota (Colombia) please tell me. And a tablet would be very appreciated: Drawing with a creepy mouse is too hard. Or if you have a better computer and want to donate it... But even any buck would be very appreciated.

3. If you know about shell scripting, you can help by fixing the build.sh file. I don't know too much about that and it could get better.

4. Reporting issues, broken links and so on.

5. Telling me your suggestions, ideas, complainments, insults and so on. Feedback is very appreciated.

For some reason Gitorious is banged up today. Clone isn't working (and neither is the download button on Gitorious). I meant to ask, why not move the whole thing to GitHub? It's easier, faster, better managed and will give you better exposure as compared to Gitorious + deviantART.

Do you have a specific reason for preferring Gitorious (over GitHub, Bitbucket etc)?

'Cause it's free (as 'software libre').
I've heard Bitbucket is free, too. And better. But currently I don't have time to try it.
And said that, I think I have to give up Betelgeuse because of that (I had to give up even to the KDE-VG where I was nominated for developing the icon system).

Great icons but a small prob with build.sh. $target points to kde config directory not icon directory. Something like this would help:
target=`kde4-config --localprefix`share/icons/Betelgeuse

Thanks for your work.

Great work on the new folders. Shaders are great. However it's a shame their isn't more icons, could this icon theme works with others? That could be perfect. This icon theme is really hight detailed, the quality is great but lacks of icons which is normal, to mix it with another similar one would be a good fit.

This set is really excellent! A couple of icons that could be added though, are icons for "graphics" category (as in Gimp/Inkscape/etc) and agnostic "Office" category (as in Office suites, PDF readers, etc).

Thank you so much! As you can see in the description, the idea is to cover all icons from KDE, so don't worry.

First, these icons are awesome! I love 'em!
But, first, there are some duplicate icons in the apps folder. not a big problem, though, just thought it ought to be fixed.
Also, you have a trash icon, but it looks empty, and I would really like to see a trash full icon.
Anyway, thanks for the awesome icons! (I will probably use them in a design of mine :)

What? With two 'firsts' I don't know which one was the first 'first'...
There have to be duplicate icons 'cause all of them are for KDE, so it can find the matching icon for a given app. Nothing to be fixed.
Just remember give credit if you use them out there (it's what the CC license says).

Best concept for a complete new default icon set for KDE, we need more icons like this.
Good work!

These are actually really good - much better than Faenza IMO, though I can see you take a little inspiration from Matthieu! Are you just planning on releasing this icon set for KDE?

What I usually do is that, I download a miui icon pack. Now I extract that icon pack, then I'll rename the icon I want to match the same one from the pack. Now zip it, just like that.

Very well done! Small problem with build.sh. It presumes $target is ~/.kde4 where my setup uses ~/.kde . A quick test to properly set $target would help.

A quick suggestion:

if [ -d $HOME/.kde4 ]; then
KDEHOME=".kde4"
elif [ -d $HOME/.kde ]; then
KDEHOME=".kde"
fi

target=$HOME/$KDEHOME/share/icons/Betelgeuse

Don't know if that helps. Sometimes a .kde folder is created in my ~ folder, containing a couple of empty folders, although my kde folder is ~/.kde4. Maybe if asking for a system variable or something do the trick.

No probs. curious about that second .kde. I wonder if its a distro-dependent thing. Anyway, I don't want to push the point except to say the test would still work in that situation as it looks for .kde4 first. It would then ignore the second .kde.

Another quick way I also considered was to extend the test out to look for .kde{4}/share/config/kdeglobals.
